Description

Pieter Casteels le Jeune (Active in Anvers in 1673-1674)

“View of the Louvre” & “View of the Pont Neuf”

Pair of oil on canvas
Same dimensions for the two: 41 x 59 cm (without frame) and 61,5 x 78,7 cm (with frame)
Period : 17th century

The Louvre Museum owns a similar view “View of the Louvre and the tower of Nesle” (29×42 cm). The artist was inspired by a print of Jacques Callot (1592 – 1635) and represented the Louvre during the reign of Henri IV, with the Grande Galerie connecting the Petite Galerie to the Tuileries. We notice, halfway of the Grande Galerie, the Porte neuve adjacent to the Wood tower (ruins of the enclosure of Charles V).
